The Presidency has accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of deliberately spreading misinformation to stir political tension and deflect attention from long-standing ₦432 billion corruption allegations against his administration.

In a statement reacting to El-Rufai’s recent letter to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu seeking clarification on an alleged importation of Thallium Sulphate from Poland, the Presidency described the move as a calculated effort to generate fear, portray himself as a victim, and destabilize the political environment.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga emphasized that El-Rufai’s actions have two main motives: creating unnecessary tension through falsehoods and diverting focus from serious financial impropriety claims in Kaduna State. The allegations stem from a Kaduna State House of Assembly probe, which accused El-Rufai’s government (2015–2023) of siphoning off approximately ₦432 billion in loans and funds without due process, leaving the state heavily indebted.

The Assembly has since petitioned anti-graft agencies including the ICPC and EFCC to investigate the matter fully. El-Rufai has repeatedly denied the accusations, insisting on due process and even offering to swear on the Quran to affirm his innocence.

This latest exchange comes amid heightened scrutiny of El-Rufai, including his scheduled appearance before the EFCC and ongoing legal challenges to the Assembly’s report.

The Presidency reiterated its commitment to transparency and urged Nigerians to disregard what it called diversionary tactics amid efforts to address corruption and promote good governance.
