The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reserved judgment in the leadership dispute within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following hearings on April 22, 2026, regarding two appeals filed by the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction. A five-member panel, led by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, will communicate the verdict date later.

These appeals challenge a March 9, 2026, Court of Appeal ruling that nullified the party’s November 2025 national convention in Ibadan, which lower courts found violated statutory provisions. 

The legal battle hinges on whether the convention was an internal affair, as argued by the Turaki faction, or a violation of court orders, as maintained by the faction backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The outcome is crucial for the 2027 general elections, with the Wike-backed executive currently recognized by INEC and controlling the party secretariat. The Supreme Court’s decision will ultimately determine the legitimate leadership of Nigeria’s main opposition party.
