Dangote Refinery Suspends Petrol Loading Sparking Price Hike Fears

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has temporarily halted the loading of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, at its Lekki facility in Lagos. This suspension, which began recently with tanker drivers instructed to vacate the premises and operations paused indefinitely, has ignited widespread speculation in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector about an impending upward adjustment in ex-depot petrol prices, potentially announced as early as Monday.

Industry sources indicate that petrol truck-out activities were stopped abruptly, while diesel loading continues unaffected. This move mirrors a recurring pattern observed in recent weeks, where brief pauses in petrol loading at the refinery have preceded notable price revisions. For instance, earlier suspensions in early March 2026 followed surges in global crude oil prices beyond $80 per barrel, leading to increases such as from N774 to N874 per litre, and subsequently to around N995 per litre in some adjustments. These changes reflect the refinery’s response to volatile international oil markets, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, supply disruptions, and escalating replacement costs.

The Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest single-train facility with ambitions to process up to 650,000 barrels per day, plays a pivotal role in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel. However, it remains exposed to global crude price fluctuations and foreign exchange dynamics. Marketers, depot operators, and bulk fuel buyers are closely monitoring developments, as any fresh ex-depot price hike would likely cascade to pump prices at filling stations nationwide. Recent adjustments have already pushed some retail prices above N1,000 per litre in various locations, exacerbating pressures on transportation costs, logistics, food prices, and overall inflation.

While the refinery has previously absorbed portions of cost escalations to stabilize the market, ongoing global volatility continues to challenge affordability. This latest suspension heightens concerns among consumers and businesses, who fear further economic strain amid Nigeria’s broader energy and cost-of-living challenges. Stakeholders await official communication from the refinery regarding resumption of loading and any pricing decisions, as the outcome could significantly influence domestic fuel availability and pricing in the short term.
