The Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved two major health-sector proposals totaling approximately ₦10 billion to enhance HIV/AIDS treatment and cancer care across Nigeria.
The approvals came during the FEC meeting on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, following memos presented by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Minister of State for Health, Iziaq Salako, announced that the first approval involves a ₦9.99 billion contract awarded to Fixing HealthCare for the procurement of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. This funding will sustain Nigeria’s free treatment programme for people living with HIV/AIDS, addressing recent supply concerns and ensuring uninterrupted access to life-saving medications under the presidential initiative.
The second approval focuses on upgrading cancer treatment infrastructure. It includes replacing equipment, providing upgrades, and offering training at six designated cancer centres, one in each geopolitical zone to ensure the continued availability of radiotherapy, a critical component of cancer management in the country.
These decisions reflect the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility, affordability, and quality, particularly for vulnerable populations facing HIV and cancer. The moves come amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s health system and reduce the burden of these diseases nationwide.
