Zamfara Education Commissioner Resigns Over Governor Lawal Defection To APC

In a significant development that highlights deepening political divisions in Zamfara State the Commissioner for Education Science and Technology Mallam Wadatau Madawaki has resigned from the state executive council.

The resignation comes barely hours after Governor Dauda Lawal formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party PDP to the All Progressives Congress APC. Madawaki who is a staunch PDP loyalist made his position clear stating that he could not continue in office under a governor who has joined the APC.

In a telephone interview confirming his decision Madawaki said I only resigned because the governor is joining the APC. I am a PDP member I have never been in the APC and I am not ready to be an APC member. His action underscores unwavering loyalty to the PDP amid the wave of defections currently sweeping through the state.

Governor Dauda Lawal recently announced his defection from the PDP to the APC citing the overriding interest of stability progress and sustainable development of Zamfara State. The move has triggered a chain reaction with reports indicating that the entire Zamfara State House of Assembly has also defected to the APC.

Governor Lawal has since accepted Madawaki resignation and appointed the Commissioner for Budget and Planning Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam to oversee the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in an acting capacity with immediate effect.

Political observers note that Madawaki a former aspirant who contested against Lawal for the PDP governorship ticket in 2022 had been reconciled with the governor and appointed as commissioner. His sudden exit however signals that not all PDP members are willing to follow the governor into the new party.

The development has further strengthened the APC in Zamfara State while leaving the PDP significantly weakened at the state level. As the political realignment continues many eyes are now on how this will shape the future of governance and party politics in the state ahead of future elections.
