The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has revealed that over $1.3 billion in donor-funded transmission projects are currently ongoing nationwide. These initiatives, supported by multilateral development partners through loans and grants backed by the Federal Government, aim to significantly expand grid capacity, modernise ageing infrastructure, reinforce weak transmission corridors, and enhance overall nationwide power delivery and reliability.

The projects are being implemented under various Project Management Units (PMUs), including those funded by the World Bank such as the Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project valued at $486 million, which focuses on strengthening critical lines and substations. Other contributions come from partners like the African Development Bank and additional multilateral sources as part of broader efforts like the Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme (TREP).

These investments target improving transmission wheeling capacity to better evacuate power from generation sources to distribution companies, reducing grid constraints, minimising system collapses, and supporting Nigeria’s growing energy demands amid economic recovery and increasing electricity access needs.

The announcement highlights ongoing progress in Nigeria’s power sector reforms, with several projects already completed or nearing completion, contributing to greater stability and efficiency in the national grid. TCN emphasized that these donor-backed efforts complement other initiatives to address longstanding challenges in power transmission and pave the way for improved electricity supply across the country.
