The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has issued a strong safety alert to Nigerian citizens residing in South Africa amid a surge in anti-foreigner protests and xenophobic attacks across several parts of the country. The commission urged all Nigerians to exercise extreme caution, temporarily close their businesses where necessary, and strictly adhere to security advisories from the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg.

According to the statement signed by NiDCOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Abike Dabiri-Erewa, protests in areas such as East London, Cape Town, Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal have turned violent in recent days, resulting in looting, destruction of property, and injuries to individuals. NiDCOM expressed deep concern that the situation continues to deteriorate despite previous diplomatic engagements between Nigeria and South Africa, stressing that expectations of de-escalation have not materialized on the ground.

The commission specifically advised Nigerian nationals to avoid any confrontation with protesters, refrain from engaging with demonstration groups, and monitor local media outlets for real-time updates on safety conditions. Nigerians were also encouraged to remain law-abiding and to report any threats or incidents promptly to the nearest Nigerian diplomatic mission or local authorities.

In addition, NiDCOM called on the South African government to take immediate and visible steps to protect Nigerians and other foreign nationals, in line with international law and African Union protocols on human rights and free movement of persons.

This latest warning comes as tensions targeting black immigrants and foreign-owned businesses escalate in various communities. NiDCOM emphasized that the protection of all residents, regardless of nationality, remains a legal and moral responsibility of the host nation. The commission continues to monitor developments closely and stands ready to provide necessary support to affected Nigerians.
