The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has strengthened its hold on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by winning five out of the six chairmanship positions in the Area Council elections held on Saturday, February 21, 2026. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the final results on Sunday, February 22, following peaceful collation amid reports of low voter turnout in several areas.

The APC triumphed in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) with Christopher Maikalangu polling 40,295 votes, Abaji with Abubakar Abdullahi, Bwari with Joshua Ishaku (around 18,466 votes), Kwali with Daniel Nuhu (around 17,032 votes), and Kuje with Danjuma Samuel Shekwolo (17,269 votes). The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured its only win in Gwagwalada, where Mohammed Kasim garnered 22,165 votes, defeating the APC candidate who received 17,788 votes.

This outcome is viewed as a boost for the APC and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, consolidating influence in the nation’s capital despite criticisms over voter apathy and ongoing electoral reforms.
