President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States conducted precision airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist camps in northwest Nigeria’s Sokoto State, describing the operation as a “powerful and deadly strike” against militants accused of targeting and killing innocent Christians.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated: “Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even Centuries!” He warned that more strikes would follow if the violence continues, adding, “May God Bless our Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead Terrorists.”

U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the strikes were carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities, resulting in the deaths of multiple ISIS militants. Video released by the Pentagon showed munitions, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, being launched from a U.S. Navy warship in the Gulf of Guinea.

Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the action as part of ongoing security cooperation, stating the strikes led to “precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West.” The ministry emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to protecting all citizens regardless of faith.

The operation follows months of escalating U.S. concern over violence in Nigeria, where Trump has highlighted attacks on Christian communities. It marks the latest in a series of U.S. military actions against ISIS affiliates in 2025, including recent strikes in Syria.

Initial assessments indicate the strikes successfully targeted known ISIS infrastructure, though details on casualties remain limited.
