The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has reaffirmed its full commitment to bolstering Nigerias electricity generation capacity amid ongoing efforts to address longstanding challenges in the power sector. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Engr Jennifer Adighije made this pledge during a recent oversight visit and interaction with the House of Representatives Committee on Power at the 570 megawatt Alaoji Combined Cycle Power Plant in Abia State.
The lawmakers commended NDPHCs leadership for accelerating progress on the long delayed Alaoji project which aims to convert the facility from open cycle to combined cycle operation adding substantial capacity to the national grid upon completion. Adighije outlined a revised timeline targeting the third quarter of 2027 for project completion assuring the committee of dedicated technical and financial support to prevent further delays and ensure smooth execution by the engineering procurement and construction contractor.
This pledge aligns with broader initiatives including the Federal Governments Power Sector Refinancing Plan which has improved liquidity enabling sustained investments in generation and transmission infrastructure under the National Integrated Power Projects. NDPHC which manages an installed capacity of approximately 4000 megawatts representing nearly 30 percent of Nigerias total has also recovered significant stranded capacity in recent times including additions from plants like Omotosho Geregu and others.
Furthermore the company is diversifying into renewable energy sources such as solar and small hydro to complement its gas fired assets while advancing the Light Up Nigeria initiative to deliver reliable power directly to industrial clusters markets universities and communities. Adighije emphasized NDPHCs role in realizing President Tinubus vision of universal electricity access for all Nigerians highlighting that enhanced generation capacity remains essential for economic growth industrialization and improved quality of life nationwide.
