The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission NUPRC has released preliminary findings indicating that the recent gas bubbling and seepage observed in Bille Community Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State is likely connected to subsurface geological activity rather than oil and gas operations. The incident which involved unusual gas emissions bubbling through waterways and mangrove swamps sparked immediate concerns among residents over potential environmental hazards health risks and possible links to nearby oil infrastructure within the Oil Mining Lease OML 18 corridor.

In response NUPRC in collaboration with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency NOSDRA and operators in the area launched urgent technical investigations including multiple joint site visits sample collections for laboratory analysis and ongoing monitoring. According to a statement from NUPRC Chief Executive Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan early field observations and deductions point to underground triggers such as shifting subsurface pressures or natural geological processes forcing trapped gas deposits to migrate and emerge at the surface.

Preliminary assessments have ruled out any direct connection to oil pollution pipeline leaks operational failures or other activities related to oil and gas infrastructure in the vicinity providing initial reassurance to the community. However the commission stressed that detailed geological geotechnical and laboratory studies are still underway to pinpoint the exact cause origin and extent of the seepage with final results expected to guide appropriate mitigation measures. The probe aligns with federal directives for transparency environmental protection and community safety emphasizing continuous monitoring additional site assessments and remedial actions if needed once conclusive evidence is obtained.

This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of oil producing regions in the Niger Delta where natural phenomena and industrial activities often intersect raising questions about long term ecological impacts and the need for robust regulatory oversight to safeguard host communities.
