In the wake of devastating multiple explosions that struck Maiduguri the Borno State capital on Monday evening Vice President Kashim Shettima has strongly condemned the attacks attributing them to Boko Haram insurgents and delivering a scathing denunciation of the terrorist group. During an on the spot assessment visit to the scene and victims receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital Shettima described the perpetrators as demented monsters who have forfeited their place in humanity stating emphatically I do not consider Boko Haram to be members of the human race.
He emphasized that no religion sanctions the killing of innocent people yet these actors refuse to recognize their victims as fellow humans. The blasts which occurred in at least three locations including the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital the Post Office area and the popular Monday Market reportedly killed at least 23 people and injured over 100 others with some sources citing up to 25 deaths and 146 wounded in what is described as one of the deadliest incidents in the city in recent years.
Authorities including the Nigerian military have linked the coordinated attacks possibly involving suicide bombings and improvised explosive devices to Boko Haram elements aiming to sow terror in the northeast region where the group originated. Shettima who hails from Borno expressed profound grief over the loss of innocent lives prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and assured that the Federal Government remains resolute in its commitment to crush terrorism through enhanced security measures deployment of additional tactical teams and sustained operations to restore lasting peace to the northeast and Nigeria at large.
He urged residents not to lose hope affirming that no matter how long the night lasts dawn will eventually break. The visit followed calls from stakeholders including Senator Ali Ndume for high level presence in response to the tragedy. Governor Babagana Zulum and President Bola Tinubu have also condemned the attacks vowing justice and intensified efforts against insurgency. This incident underscores the persistent security challenges in Borno despite ongoing military campaigns and highlights the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to end the cycle of violence.
