Unfortunately, the recurring actions of Chief Ray Nnaji, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Vice Chairman for the South-East, continue to show a pattern of self-interest over political loyalty. For a party seeking to rebuild and reclaim its dominant status in the South-East region, figures who treat political and personal alliances as disposable tools pose a significant institutional threat.
To understand Chief Ray Nnaji’s political trajectory, one must examine his history with past benefactors. It remains a matter of public record within Enugu’s political circles that former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani extended immense benevolence to Nnaji during his administration, including the gift of a Prado SUV. Yet, when political tides shifted and Senator Nnamani required a united front of support, Nnaji was among the first to turn his back on his former benefactor. This established an early warning sign that for Nnaji, personal gain consistently overrides long-term loyalty.
The most recent and egregious example of this pattern involves Enugu PDP stakeholder and governorship aspirant, Chief Samson Chukwu Nnamani. Reliable internal sources reveal that Nnaji repeatedly approached Chief Samson Nnamani under the guise of personal and family financial distress. Out of sheer empathy and a desire to support an elder, Chief Samson reportedly gifted Nnaji N500,000 to alleviate immediate family needs.
Not long after, Nnaji returned to Chief Samson Nnamani under the pretext of holding critical political discussions. Citing further severe financial burdens, Nnaji successfully requested additional assistance, securing a whopping N3 million financial lifelines from Chief Samson.
What followed was a shocking display of political opportunism. Instead of showing gratitude, Nnaji reportedly worked behind the scenes to engineer the sudden suspension of Chief Samson Chukwu Nnamani from the PDP. Insiders allege this move was meticulously planned to clear the political path for former Minister Uche Nnaji ahead of the party’s primary elections.
The fallout from this betrayal took an embarrassing, public turn over an everyday business transaction. Following Nnaji’s backstabbing political maneuvers, Chief Samson Nnamani logically revoked Nnaji’s access to his private hotel gym facilities.
Rather than quietly accepting the consequences of his actions, Nnaji immediately rushed to the press, raising a sensationalized alarm that his “life was under threat”. To well-meaning observers, utilizing a routine revocation of gym privileges to manufacture a national media narrative of assassination threats highlights a distinct lack of integrity. A political leader who can take N3 million from an associate and arrange his political execution days later is a liability to the stability of the party. The South-East deserves leaders of integrity, not political opportunists who trade their conscience for short-term personal gain.
