The persistent nationwide blackout plaguing Nigeria may soon ease as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to tackle the severe gas supply constraints hampering electricity generation from thermal power plants. Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu made this assurance in his Eid el Fitr message to Nigerians on Thursday titled Let Our Sacrifices Strengthen National Progress where he highlighted decisive steps already taken by the government to address the longstanding issue.

Adelabu noted that recent interventions are yielding gradual improvements with optimism that these measures will lead to significant enhancements in power supply in the near future. The gas shortages stemming largely from mounting debts in the power sector including an estimated N3.3 trillion owed to gas suppliers by generation companies have forced many thermal plants to reduce operations or shut down resulting in grid generation dropping to critically low levels around 3900 to 4300 megawatts in recent weeks.

This has triggered widespread load shedding increased outages and hardship for households businesses and industries especially during the festive period. Distribution companies across states have repeatedly cited reduced gas supply as the primary cause of the diminished electricity allocation. The minister emphasized that resolving these gas constraints remains a central priority for stabilizing the sector under President Bola Tinubu’s reforms which aim to ensure more reliable and sustainable power delivery.

While no specific timelines or detailed measures were outlined in the message Adelabu urged patience and continued commitment from Nigerians describing the current challenges as part of a necessary transition toward a stronger power system. Industry stakeholders including the Association of Power Generation Companies have linked the crisis to unpaid debts totaling over N6.8 trillion across the value chain prompting calls for urgent debt resolution payments and structural fixes.

As efforts continue the government’s proactive stance offers hope for relief from the debilitating blackouts that have intensified in early 2026 amid economic pressures and seasonal demands.
