President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs. This development follows the resignation of the immediate past minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down to pursue his ambition of contesting the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State. The appointment marks a significant elevation for Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who had been serving as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs since late 2024, bringing her extensive diplomatic experience to the helm of Nigeria’s foreign policy machinery.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu is a seasoned diplomat, lawyer, and former beauty pageant titleholder with a distinguished career in public service. She previously served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ghana and later as Ambassador to Spain. She has also held the position of Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations World Tourism Organization.

Her appointment as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in November 2024 positioned her to gain deep insight into the operations of the ministry, preparing her for this elevated role at a critical time when Nigeria continues to strengthen its bilateral and multilateral relations across Africa and beyond.

The resignation of Yusuf Tuggar earlier this year aligned with President Tinubu’s directive to all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to vacate their offices. Tuggar’s departure created a vacancy at the top of the foreign affairs portfolio, prompting the swift elevation of Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

Analysts view this move as strategic, leveraging her proven competence, international exposure, and familiarity with the ministry to ensure continuity and effective leadership in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements.

This appointment is expected to inject fresh energy into Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, particularly in areas such as economic diplomacy, regional security cooperation within ECOWAS and the African Union, and the protection of Nigerian interests abroad. Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s background as the widow of the late Ikemba Nnewi, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, also resonates with many Nigerians, adding a layer of national symbolism to her new responsibilities.
